Colorado Avalanche 1st Overall Pick Mackinnon vs. Drouin vs. Jones

The 2013 NHL Draft was considered one of the best drafts if not the best NHL draft since 2003. Did the Colorado Avalanche make the right selection with center Nathan Mackinnon? I thought Mackinnon was the best player in the draft however defenseman Seth Jones was one of the best defenseman coming into the draft in a few years and top defenseman can be difficult to find. Jonathan Drouin may have more pure talent than Mackinnon but may not quite have the same types of intangibles and he may never have Mackinnon's ability on both ends of the ice.

More goes into how these players do than their statistics but you can follow the statistics of these three players here for fun to start. Yes I am not including the 2nd overall pick Aleksander Barkov because the purpose of this is not just to compare all the picks, we want to keep the battles to as few players as possible and Mackinnon vs Jones is interesting because it is a forward vs a top defenseman and Mackinnon vs Drouin is intriguing because they were linemates at Halifax.

1st Overall Pick Center Nathan Mackinnon Colorado Avalanche

3rd Overall Pick Left Wing Jonathan Drouin Tampa Bay Lightning

4th Overall Pick Defenseman Seth Jones Nashville Predators

Florida Panthers 2nd Overall Pick Barkov vs. Drouin vs. Jones

The 2013 NHL Draft was considered one of the best drafts if not the best NHL draft since 2003. Did the Florida Panthers make the right selection with center Aleksander Barkov? Barkov is more physical than Jonathan Drouin but Drouin is a very gifted player with vision, puckhandling and quick hands. Defenseman Seth Jones was one of the best defenseman coming into the draft in a few years and top defenseman can be difficult to find.

More goes into how these players do than their statistics but you can follow the statistics of these three players here for fun to start.

2nd Overall Pick Center Aleksander Barkov Florida Panthers

3rd Overall Pick Left Wing Jonathan Drouin Tampa Bay Lightning

4th Overall Pick Defenseman Seth Jones Nashville Predators

Tampa Bay Lightning 3rd Overall Pick Drouin vs. Jones

The 2013 NHL Draft was considered one of the best drafts if not the best NHL draft since 2003. Did the Tampa Bay Lightning make the right selection with left wing Jonathan Drouin? You could have made an argument before the draft that Jonathan Drouin was the best prospect in the 2013 NHL Draft with his overall talent. Did the benefit of playing on the same line with 1st overall pick Nate Mackinnon outweigh Drouin's talent? Did Jonathan have one great breakout year that may have been somewhat of a fluke or is he just scratching the surface of his potential? The Lightning passed up one of the best defenseman to come into the draft, Seth Jones who went immediately after the Lightning selected Drouin.

More goes into how these players do than their statistics but you can follow the statistics of these three players here for fun to start.

3rd Overall Pick Left Wing Jonathan Drouin Tampa Bay Lightning

4th Overall Pick Defenseman Seth Jones Nashville Predators

Nashville Predators 4th Overall Pick Jones vs. Nurse vs. Ristolainen

The 2013 NHL Draft was considered one of the best drafts if not the best NHL draft since 2003. Did the Nashville Predators make the right selection with the top defenseman prospect Seth Jones? The Predators defensive corps was already talented and obviously with Shea Weber, Nashville has one of the NHL's top defenseman if not the top defenseman. Jones did stand out as the top defenseman in the draft prior to the draft however this was a very good draft for defenseman. We could include 5th overall pick Center Elias Lindholm in the battle but I'm going to stick with a battle of the top 3 defensemen.

More goes into how these players do than their statistics but you can follow the statistics of these three players here for fun to start.
4th Overall Pick Defenseman Seth Jones Nashville Predators

7th Overall Pick Defenseman Darnell Nurse Edmonton Oilers

8th Overall Pick Defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen Buffalo Sabres

Carolina Hurricanes 5th Overall Pick Lindholm vs. Monahan vs. Nichushkin

The 2013 NHL Draft was considered one of the best drafts if not the best NHL draft since 2003. Did the Carolina Hurricanes make the right selection with Swedish center Elias Lindholm? Lindholm was evaluated to be a good two way center prospect with a solid international resume but they passed on another solid two way center prospect Sean Monahan and a Russian big and talented forward Valeri Nichushkin. Carolina also passed on very good defensemen but we'll stick with the forwards in this battle.

More goes into how these players do than their statistics but you can follow the statistics of these three players here for fun to start.
5th Overall Pick Center Elias Lindholm Carolina Hurricanes

6th Overall Pick Center Sean Monahan Calgary Flames

10th Overall Pick Left Wing/Right Wing Valeri Nichushkin

Calgary Flames 6th Overall Pick Monahan vs. Nurse vs. Ristolainen

The 2013 NHL Draft was considered one of the best drafts if not the best NHL draft since 2003. Did the Calgary Flames make the right selection with center Sean Monahan? Calgary had 3 first round selections in a good draft for defenseman and they didn't use one of the three picks for a defenseman. The Flames may have some young defenseman in the organization and Monahan may have been a safe pick but did they ultimately make a mistake passing up defensemen Darnell Nurse or Rasmus Ristolainen? The Flames took wingers Emile Poirier and Morgan Klimchuk with their other two first round selections and defenseman Keegan Kanzig with a 3rd round draft pick.

More goes into how these players do than their statistics but you can follow the statistics of these three players here for fun to start.
6th Overall Pick Center Sean Monahan Calgary Flames

7th Overall Pick Defenseman Darnell Nurse Edmonton Oilers

8th Overall Pick Defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen Buffalo Sabres

Edmonton Oilers 7th Overall Pick Nurse vs. Ristolainen and 5 other Defensemen

The 2013 NHL Draft was considered one of the best drafts if not the best NHL draft since 2003. Did the Edmonton Oilers make the right selection on Defenseman Darnell Nurse? Edmonton basically had the pick of several of the top prospects on defense besides 4th overall selection Seth Jones. Rasmus Ristolainen who they passed on may have been the most polished and ready defenseman on the board while Nurse has athleticism and upside.
This is possibly going to be an exciting class of defensemen to follow although it could take for many to get to the NHL. Seven defenseman were drafted from Edmonton's 7th overall pick through San Jose's 18th overall pick.

More goes into how these players do than their statistics but you can follow the statistics of these three players here for fun to start.
7th Overall Pick Defenseman Darnell Nurse Edmonton Oilers

8th Overall Pick Defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen Buffalo Sabres
11th Overall Pick Defenseman Samuel Morin Philadelphia Flyers
13th Overall Pick Defenseman Josh Morrissey Winnipeg Jets
15th Overall Pick Defenseman Ryan Pulock New York Islanders
16th Overall Pick Defenseman Nikita Zadorov Buffalo Sabres
18th Overall Pick Defenseman Mirco Muller San Jose Sharks

Buffalo Sabres 8th Overall Pick Ristolainen vs. Horvat vs. Nichushkin

The 2013 NHL Draft was considered one of the best drafts if not the best NHL draft since 2003. Did the Buffalo Sabres make the right selection on Defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen? The Sabres also took another defenseman Nikita Zadorov with the 16th overall pick in the draft so it would be more interesting to compare Ristolainen to the forwards taken right after the Sabres 8th overall pick.
Buffalo also took centers J.T. Compher and Connor Hurley in the second round and Winger Justin Bailey in the 2nd round as well as Wing Nicolas Baptiste early in the 3rd round however the Sabres could have taken Horvat, Nichushkin or even Domi at 8th overall and they would get a big defenseman Zadorov at 16 overall though they would not have known if he would be there at 16. Buffalo also could have drafted a defenseman such as Robert Hagg instead of say Connor Hurley. So it will be interesting to follow these players and alternatives with Buffalo's mass of early round picks in the 2013 draft.

More goes into how these players do than their statistics but you can follow the statistics of these three players here for fun to start.
8th Overall Pick Defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen Buffalo Sabres
9th Overall Pick Center/Left Wing Bo Horvat Vancouver Canucks
10th Overall Pick Left Wing/Right Wing Valeri Nichushkin Dallas Starss

Vancouver Canucks 9th Overall Pick Horvat vs. Nichushkin vs. Domi

The 2013 NHL Draft was considered one of the best drafts if not the best NHL draft since 2003. Did the Vancouver Canucks make the right selection on Center/Left Wing Bo Horvat? The Canucks of course traded Goaltender Cory Schneider to the New Jersey Devils for the 9th overall selection so of course this pick may be under even greater scrutiny in the future.
Bo Horvat was one of my favorite players in the draft so I am anxious to see how Horvat performs in the future. But should Vancouver have selected the big and talented forward Valeri Nichushkin instead or even Horvat's teammate playmaking center Max Domi?

More goes into how these players do than their statistics but you can follow the statistics of these three players here for fun to start.

Dallas Stars 10th Overall Pick Nichushkin vs. Domi vs. Wennberg

The 2013 NHL Draft was considered one of the best drafts if not the best NHL draft since 2003. Did the Dallas Stars make the right selection on Left Wing/Right Wing Valeri Nichushkin?
Nichushkin is a big power forward with immense talent and at times was considered a top 5 pick in this draft. So is Nichushkin going to become a player worthy of a top 5 selection in an excellent draft or did he fall for a reason? Dallas passed up playmaking center Max Domi and Swedish center Alexander Wennberg whom were other forwards they could have selected. They also passed up some good prospects on defense.

More goes into how these players do than their statistics but you can follow the statistics of these three players here for fun to start.
10th Overall Pick Left Wing/Right Wing Valeri Nichushkin Dallas Starss
12th Overall Pick Center Max Domi Phoenix Coyotes
14th Overall Pick Center Alexander Wennberg Columbus Blue Jackets

Philadelphia Flyers 11th Overall Pick Morin vs. Morrissey vs. Pulock vs. Zadorov vs. Mueller

The 2013 NHL Draft was considered one of the best drafts if not the best NHL draft since 2003. Did the Philadelphia Flyers make the right selection on Defenseman Samuel Morin? The Flyers clearly needed to upgrade their system with young defensemen and they are loaded with young centers both on the NHL team and in their prospect system. They spent a 2012 first round pick on center Scott Laughton when they already had Claude Giroux who is still young, Brayden Schenn who may need to move to left wing because they signed Vincent Lecavalier in the offseason, and 2011 1st round draft pick Sean Couturier. 2011 third round draft pick center Nick Cousins was one of the top point producers in the OHL.
They could probably use a sniper on the wings but centers and defenseman have a little more value at the 11th pick overall and the Flyers have a number of solid wingers in their system also.
Although Philadelphia may not have quite matched the Buffalo Sabres duo of defenseman from the 2013 draft of Rasmus Ristolainen and Nikita Zadarov, the Flyers may have found a steal with the 41st overall pick in the 2013 draft in defenseman Robert Hagg from Sweden so the Flyers seemed to have added two potential future starting quality defensemen with Morin and Hagg.
This is possibly going to be an exciting class of defensemen to follow although it could take for many to get to the NHL. Seven defenseman were drafted from Edmonton's 7th overall pick through San Jose's 18th overall pick.

More goes into how these players do than their statistics but you can follow the statistics of these five players here for fun to start.

Phoenix Coyotes 12th Overall Pick Domi vs. Wennberg vs. Gauthier

The 2013 NHL Draft was considered one of the best drafts if not the best NHL draft since 2003. Did the Phoenix Coyotes make the right selection with center Max Domi?
Phoenix needs scoring and have defensemen. They passed on the Swedish center Alex Wennberg and center Frederic Gauthier who is a tall center.

More goes into how these players do than their statistics but you can follow the statistics of these three players here for fun to start.
12th Overall Pick Center Max Domi Phoenix Coyotes
14th Overall Pick Center Alexander Wennberg Columbus Blue Jackets

Winnipeg Jets 13th Overall Pick Morrissey vs. Pulock vs. Mueller

The 2013 NHL Draft was considered one of the best drafts if not the best NHL draft since 2003. Did the Winnipeg Jets make the right selection on Defenseman Josh Morrisey? Morrissey, Pulock and Mueller were all available at the 13th pick and all have offensive skills on defense and have potential as two way defensemen.

15th Overall Pick Defenseman Ryan Pulock New York Islanders
18th Overall Pick Defenseman Mirco Muller San Jose Sharks

Columbus Blue Jackets 14th Overall Pick Wennberg vs. Lazar vs. Pulock vs. Zadorov

The 2013 NHL Draft was considered one of the best drafts if not the best NHL draft since 2003. Did the Columbus Blue Jackets make the right selection with Swedish center Alexander Wennberg?
Columbus had 3 first round picks including the 19th overall pick in addition to this pick the 14th pick. The Blue Jackets ended up taking Wennberg, forward Kerby Rychel and center Marko Dano in the 1st round. They did draft a promising defenseman Dillon Heatherington in the 2nd round. Should Columbus have taken Pulock, Zadorov or even Mueller all defensemen who went from 15th to 18th overall? Columbus chose Wennberg over another center Curtis Lazar.

More goes into how these players do than their statistics but you can follow the statistics of these four players here for fun to start.

17th Overall Pick Center Curtis Lazar Ottawa Senators

New York Islanders 15th Overall Pick Pulock vs. Zadorov vs. Mueller

The 2013 NHL Draft was considered one of the best drafts if not the best NHL draft since 2003. Did the New York Islanders make the right selection on Defenseman Ryan Pulock? Pulock and Mueller were both available at the 13th pick and both have offensive skills on defense and have potential as two way defensemen. Zadorov is a big, physical defenseman with offensive potential.
This is possibly going to be an exciting class of defensemen to follow although it could take for many to get to the NHL. Seven defenseman were drafted from Edmonton's 7th overall pick through San Jose's 18th overall pick.

Buffalo Sabres 16th Overall Pick Zadorov vs. Lazar vs. Rychel vs. Mantha

The 2013 NHL Draft was considered one of the best drafts if not the best NHL draft since 2003. Did the Buffalo Sabres make the right selection on Defenseman Nikita Zadorov? The Sabres had already taken a defenseman with the 8th overall pick and took four forwards in the 2nd round and high 3rd round but should they have taken a forward with the 16th overall pick?
This is possibly going to be an exciting class of defensemen to follow although it could take for many to get to the NHL. Seven defenseman were drafted from Edmonton's 7th overall pick through San Jose's 18th overall pick.

21st Overall Pick Center Frederic Gauthier Toronto Maple Leafs

San Jose Sharks 18th Overall Pick Mueller vs. Rychel vs. Mantha

The 2013 NHL Draft was considered one of the best drafts if not the best NHL draft since 2003. Did the San Jose Sharks make the right selection with Defenseman Mirco Mueller? Mueller an athletic defenseman who wasn't quite as highly ranked with some scouting services until the draft approached was the 8th defenseman selected in the 1st round and only one more defenseman would be selected in the 1st round at the 26th overall selection when Anaheim chose Shea Theodore.
Rychel and Mantha both goal scoring wingers were selected immediately after Mueller at 18.

Should Columbus have taken Anthony Mantha the Right Wing/Left Wing instead? Columbus had already taken center Alex Wennberg and also drafted center Marko Dano in the late 1st round with their third pick in the 1st round.

The 2013 NHL Draft was considered one of the best drafts if not the best NHL draft since 2003. Did the Montreal Canadiens make the right selection with Right Wing Michael McCarron? The Canadiens may have been seeking a bigger power forward type like McCarron or Erne as opposed to more of a smaller scorer like Klimchuk but will this prove to be the best decision at the 25th pick in a good draft?
